Lios-na-gCon is an excellent example of a restored ringfort close to Clonakilty. Ringforts were built and occupied between c.400 AD and c.1200 AD, in the Early Christian and Viking periods.
Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, which has been renovated recently is a fine example of an Irish tower house with many defensive features such as a murder hole, crenulations, and stumble steps.
Enjoy the scenery while discovering the Park's environmental heritage in all its facets.
We pause here to remind you that the Park is large with many miles of trails. Some are short and can be covered quickly by even the most reluctant rambler while others are more extensive.
One of our favourite Sunday afternoon activities is a long walk along Redbarn Strand (near Youghal in East Cork), followed by lunch or dinner in one of the towns romantic seafood restaurants.
Pop down to Cobh (20 minutes by train from Cork City). The Queestown story tells of coffin & convict ships, graceful liners and tragic ship wrecks (including The Titanic) and of the 3 million people who emigrated from Cobh.
Mitchelstown Caves are said to be one of Europe’s major show caves, they are situated off the main Cork to Dublin road and is a must on your itinerary of the region.
