Yahoo for Cork

Despite the doom and gloom (and we are not talking about the weather) Cork is certainly getting its share of international profile. One that seems to have escaped the general media after all the hype of the Lonely Planet announcement a few months back is that the highly influential search engine Yahoo China also voted Cork as one of their Top 10 tourist cities to visit in 2010. We were actually listed third behind Istanbul and Kyoto in Japan. In its description they described the city as ‘famous not only for its traditional Irish culture (does that mean we love the black stuff more than others?) but also for its 21st century modernity. This is another hugely significant announcement which will hopefully be capitalised upon at the World EXPO in Shanghai (with which Cork is a twinned city).

That means with all the promotion done on the back of the Lonely Planet, we shall shortly expect to see coach loads of Chinese tourists happily snapping pictures of Shandon and the English Market, so all we need to do now is find out how to say Céad Mile Fáilte in Chinese for a real Cork welcome like.
