Lisselan Gardens were created in the Robinsonian style in the early 1850s. The Bence-Jonce family established 30 acres of gardens which exploit the natural features and contours provided by the valley and the Argideen River running through it.
William Bence-Jones selected a site on a promontory above the river. Lewis Vulliamy then designed a French chateau-style house above the river.
