Macroom

Macroom is a busy market town in the valley of the Sullane River. The gateway of Macroom Castle still stands and was once owned by Sir William Penn whose son founded Pennsylvania. The Golf Club is a parkland course situated within the grounds of the Castle. Some of the other attractions include Macroom Castle Demesne, the Riverside Park which has been developed with the entrance through the restored gateway. Macroom is also close to the Gearagh which is of major wildlife interest. For theatre and cinema lovers, there is the Briery Gap Cultural Centre.

Five kilometres west of Macroom, to the left of the main road, in a most picturesque setting, Carrigaphooca Castle stands on a rock above the trees. The ‘pooka’ is a malicious spirit who haunted this fairytale place.

Of interest to younger members of the family will be The Prince August toy soldier factory which is a must.
