Ireland’s Ancient East – The Big Trip

Now that you are getting your teeth into Ireland’s history, we want you to visit even more and Medieval Kilkenny is our next exploration base.

8 Days/7 Nights Ireland’s Ancient East – The Big Trip

Staying with our South East exploration of Ireland, we now travel on for two wonderful nights is the medieval city of Kilkenny. Small and compact and sitting on the River Nore, Kilkenny certainly packs a punch way bigger than its size might suggest. First of all Kilkenny Castle is impossible to miss perched imperiously overlooking the river. Built originally in the 12th century, the current granite edifice mainly dates from the 19th century and is truly impressive to view from any angle.

But that is just the start, between the Hole in the Wall – An Elizabethan Tavern from the 16th century, The Smithwicks Experience, The Rothe House, Castlecomer Discovery Park, Jerpoint Abbey all of which can be seen at www.visitikilkenny.ie you will end up with the sinking feeling that you will have to leave things out. Then there is my personal favourite ‘The Lost Village of Jerpoint‘ where St Nicholas himself is said to be buried. Yes, you read this correctly St Nicholas of Mr Clause fame is reputedly buried in Kilkenny, but dont just take my word for it! And believe me when I say there is a good story to be heard here.
